277 of 279 people found the following review helpful.
Feature by Feature Review
By Bob Robertson
I spent several months researching HDTV’s and finally landed on this model (Samsung LN40D630). I read a lot of the forums online (Cnet.com) about this particular unit, and I had several concerns that wound up being unfounded. I think the best way to approach this review is to do it by some of the major features, so here goes:

AutoMotion Plus (AMP):
I was initially concerned about the AutoMotion Plus feature. Many forum posts complained about it. I was afraid it would be too smooth (i.e too much “soap opera effect”). My concerns were unfounded. It’s easy to turn off this feature and it is easy to customize. I love that it is customizable by SOURCE (meaning the settings for your cable may be different for your DVD or BluRay player and the TV will save them as such). I like it very much for fast-motion (such as hockey games) and use the “clear setting” for just about everything else. The “demo mode” is a nice feature showing you the comparison of AMP on and off on a splitscreen. pretty cool.

Connectshare:
This is the feature that allows you to plug in a USB hard drive or thumb drive and play videos, music, or look at pictures. I’m pleased to say that this quickly has become my favorite feature since I have a lot of videos saved on my computer. The TV does a great job reading almost all of the major file formats. The external HD powers off when the TV turns off, which is a nice feature (because I don’t have remember to unplug it every time I shut off the TV and vice versa). The built-in video player interface firmware works great (pause, fast forward, and returns you to the place where you left off if you have to shut down, even if you turn everything off and come back later). The music player interface is a bit clunky, but it works ok. My only complaint about the music player is that it doesn’t include a shuffle feature. I’ve written Samsung and asked that such feature be included in future firmware upgrades.

Firmware Upgrade:
One of the first things I did was upgrade the firmware. The instructions on Samsung’s website (and in the owner’s manual) were easy and worked perfectly. I look forward to further refinements from Samsung.

Allshare:
As I understand it, this feature allows you to plug your TV into your PC and watch the videos, look at pix, or play music you have stored there. I haven’t quite set this up yet, but I did download and install the Allshare software from Samsung on my PC and I setup my media server in no time flat. Very easy and straightforward. All I need now is a long ethernet cable to plug it into the TV (you can go wireless with a special USB wireless adapter, but the adapter is a lot more expensive than an ethernet cable!). I’ll be plugging the TV directly into my router. Fingers crossed. But even if it doesn’t work, it’s really no big deal to save media on an external USB hard drive and plug it into the TV directly. [I'll update my review after I've had a chance to experiment with this feature].

TV Picture Quality:
Samsung is hard to beat in this category. The image in the store looked great. And looked even better in my home environment. Clear, crisp, beautiful. Very happy!

Sound Quality and Outputs:
This is perhaps the weakest feature of this TV. The sound is often “tinny.” Fortunately there are several easily selectable default sound settings that allow you to compensate. The Clear Voice setting works great for dialog. An equalizer is included for a custom setting, which can also help compensate some as well. I was disappointed that the unit didn’t have a dedicated headphone out jack on the side. It does, however, include a single “audio out” jack in the back. This works fine with my wireless headphones which are amplified (i.e. built-in volume control), but it won’t work well with “dumb” headphones (with no amplification). Since there is only one audio output jack, I had to plug in a splitter to send the audio out signal to both my headphones and my home stereo, which works fine. It also has an optical audio out jack, but my home stereo is ancient and won’t accept that input type. I wish the audio out jack was variable (i.e. volume would be controlled by the TV), but it isn’t. Perhaps the optical audio output is variable… I don’t know… haven’t tried it.

That about sums up the major features of this TV. Overall I’m very pleased with my choice. Hope this helps you!

Maybe the LN46D630 isn’t as much dumb as it is ignorant. Which isn’t a bad thing. Indeed, that’s why I bought it. More on that in a bit.

Before I get to saying what I like about it, let me respond to some of the negative comments I’ve read. I can’t answer for their experiences, but I can share my own. The picture quality is quite good. I don’t have any issues with light leaking or other problems. It is a very consistent image that allows for a great variety of adjustments. If you look in the discussion under the 40 inch version of this model, you can find some added pointers about adjustment. I also got the Disney WOW! dvd which helps for much more precise adjustment.

Some others have noted problems with shipping. I had no problems at all. Amazon shipped this tv through Pilot Shipping, with a scheduled appointment set when I purchased this. Very professional service. It did take a bit longer than my usual prime shipping, but everything was handled quite well and everything arrived in perfect condition. Two men carried the television into my living room. They didn’t set it up, but I didn’t want them to anyhow.

When I did set it up, everything turned on quick and easy. The size means that unless you’re big and strong you might want help setting it up, as it is a bit awkward to maneuver to attach the base.

I bought this model because I was wanting a television that allowed for good multimedia connections but was not loaded down with a lot of extraneous features I wouldn’t want or need. I don’t need a television with its own browser or apps. I have it hooked up to a pc, which gives it all those functions. Indeed, with so many game systems, blu-ray players, etc. with their own ways of connecting to media sites, paying a lot more for a television that does the same seemed plain silly. The newest models offer 3D, but that’s much more of a gimmick than something I really wanted. The technology isn’t advanced enough to use it without thinking about it, and when I’m watching a show or movie, I want to think about what I’m watching, not how.

So, this ‘ignorant’ television allows me to connect whatever I want, and have a great image when I do. I have an over the air antenna connected to it as well as a PC, playstation, and dvd player. The reception is good with the antenna, and living near Los Angeles gives me about 70+ channels to choose from (though a large percentage of those are in languages I don’t understand). I connected my PC to the TV with a HDMI cable, and that provides both high quality image and sound. It’s like having a much larger monitor with all the same functions, but I almost exclusively use it for multimedia.

The sound is good, but not great. We live in an apartment now, though, which means that great sound would bother the neighbors. We can have a fan on, and still keep the volume about 15 (out of 100), which means the speakers work sufficiently and are indeed better than the model we had before.

The image quality is superb. Deep blacks and bright whites. There does tend to be a bit more shadow in these Samsungs, so you have to think about whether you want deeper blacks or more washed out images that show more detail. I’ve yet to be bothered by it, myself, so it is far from being a major issue. Color is great, and the extensive adjustments that are possible make it very personalized to your own preferences.

Each of these preferences have to be adjusted for each source, however, which makes for a bit more work. I wish they had a universal setting to adjust every input the same.

But that’s a minor issue among many other very great attributes. I wanted a TV that functioned more as a screen for my other media products, not a TV that replicated all those other functions. I wanted a TV with high quality picture, a lot of inputs for both new and older components, and that would allow me to customize what I needed without having to pay for a lot of stuff I didn’t need.

This has fulfilled and exceeded in parts my expectations.

111 of 114 people found the following review helpful.
Excellent value
By Brian C
I purchased this TV to replace a 2006 LG plasma that went out of commission. It was going to cost $300-350 to fix it so why not spend a little extra for a brand new TV… Overall extremely happy with the TV, it was a very good value for the price.

1) Picture quality – of course compared to the old LG plasma, the picture quality of fantastic. Rich colors, very little glare on the screen, pretty good viewing angle. I looked at this and several other Samsung models at a local electronics store, and I honestly could not tell much difference between this model and some of the higher-end models in terms of just the picture. I was specifically interested in the D550, which is about $100 cheaper since it is 60 Hz, but the D630 did have a small but noticeable improvement in fine details especially with moving objects. I also thought about the D5500 but to me there was not much difference between LCD and LED all else being equal. I can see why LED would be attractive for people who plan to hang it on the wall, but if you are going to let it sit on a stand you can’t really appreciate how thin it is anyway. Made more sense to spend the extra $100 for 120 Hz than LED.

2) Sound quality – so so, but what do you expect from a TV. It is good for regular TV viewing, I really like the “clear voice” mode which lets you hear conversations easily without cranking up the volume. The TV speakers sound a little thin or hollow if you are watching a movie.

3) Other features – remote works fine, nothing particularly good or bad. TV stand swivels, which is good. Connectivity is good, 4 HDMI and 2 USB are more than enough for me. It does not have built in wireless, which didn’t matter for me since my router usually sits under the TV anyway so I just hook up the ethernet cable if I needed internet connection. No web browser or apps, which again would have been pretty useless for me since I can get all of that through my PS3. I tried the Allshare feature to stream videos from my computer to the TV. It works okay but I find it easier to just connect my portable hard drive to the TV.

You crave to purchase a flat computer screen TV with you are not personality able to resolve whether to depart for the reason that Plasma vs LCD TV. At the awfully foremost instance, you should discern that the interrogative of burn-in is not a setback for it was sooner than also Plasma TVs. It may engagement spoken that it is not given that dreadful given that it was as well as the more experienced Plasma TV models. In bid that you may well choose on which category of TV you are moving to buy, there are three interrogations which you taste to answer. Few idea are displayed to below.

Reflections plus Glare cherish the Screen

The initially interrogation is if the shelter where you pouring to see the TV is anyhow fuddled or dark. This brings wide awake the interrogative of ambient light. The light up inside the compartment is single of the numerous top-notch issues preferring Plasma vs LCD TV or the different manners around. The good taste of murals inside a Plasma TV lowers for the bulk of ambient remove darkness from inside the cubicle increases. LCD TVs customarily function improved a in any case illuminated stable as likened to plasma TVs.

Plasma as well as LCD TV provide dissimilar portrait quality, as well as depends on the figure of ambient light up give inside the room. A Plasma TV bestows a more adept sophistication of the work of art inside a low ambient illumine environment. A a great deal of improved image pleasantness is presented by Plasma TV inside a shadowy room, motivating a enhanced evaluate ratio, in addition to gloomy black levels inside comparison to a LCD TV. If you behold a Plasma TV a anyways muddled room, the photograph might glance dimmer than whatever you will hit upon inside a LCD TV. This is mostly ascribable to the glow also reflections relishes the ambient light.

But this minute difficulty Plasma TVs has been a little admitted heed of. With anti-glare display screen human being old miscelanneous of the finest Plasma TVs, the conclusion of ambient remove darkness from on icon virtue has been very much reduced. The display screen a Plasma TV is produced of glass, with a really unusual aid to that windowpane panel makes the computer screen to rebuff blaze plus reflections indulge in lights. The anti-glare succor presented to the windowpane display screen lowers the reflectivity of the transom to a vast extent. When looking at the TV a dimly potted room, you do not obtain the nearby lights meditated like the computer screen of your Plasma TV on to your eyes. If you intend to behold TV along furthermore the area lights on, it is a tolerable hints to get hold of a Plasma TV also anti-glare coating. The pinnacle Plasma TVs handy the promote at the present time reason anti-glare screens since the reason to prune reflections savours the ambient remove darkness from the room.

Plasma vs LCD TV Response Time

Generally babbling if you are observing pleased as well as costly tempo scenes a plasma TV will confer an vantage versus LCD TV. This is given that its reply phase is lower. This puts the Plasma TV accurate on pinnacle since sports, in addition to games. If you behold quickly going scenes because sports on a LCD TV, you will imagine a blur with reference to the edges of the going objects. Note nevertheless that if you function to manipulate activity a bunch of time, a plasma TV is not such a grand information for the reason that of it’s susceptibility to burn-in. There are LCD TVs on the advertise at the moment as well as speedy reaction time, along with single may perhaps capture a model with rejoinder point in time of 5ms or lower. You competently labor under to take wits that if crisp representation is critical for the reason that you, a low retort season (high refresh rate) is a trait you should engagement seeking for.

Screen Size

If you akin to a hefty flat panel, Plasma TV yields a minor charges reward excess of LCD TVs. Also, anon there are no Plasma TVs the promote less than 42 inches, nonetheless it is possible that we will quickly picture Plasma TVs plus 32 edge visual display unit size. So on the whole if you crave a tiny HDTV your hardly possibility is an LCD TV.

It is prudent that you could sit wherever between 1.5 as well as 3 times your HDTV display screen size for the reason that the greatest seeing experience. So since a discovering distance of 8 feet (96inches) you may well wish an LCD that is at smallest amount 32 inches, then again not added subsequently 63inches. If your envisioning distance was 12 feet (144 inches) you may possibly covet a visual display unit size with a minimum of 46 inches plus a maximum of 96 inches as the finest seeing experience.

2. Know anything traits are important – Most groups of people are moving to crave a 1080p tv, then again anything as regards to evaluate ratio, reaction times along with refresh rates. Do you gaze at sports or cinema in addition to a cluster of swiftly action? If you do afterward you will desire something plus low answer times with may perhaps desire to believe a 120Hz LCD as silver-tongued motion. Is the gander of the small screen television important. Some manufacturers pass through begun releasing LCDs along furthermore trendy bezels where the television tube gives the impression mammoth as soon as rotated off given that anyways since on. Some kinsfolk will express that lone of the disadvantages of go shopping browse cyberspace is that you don’t labor under the help of a constructive shop clerk to lead you finished the purchasing process. While that could engagement precise of a sphere household theater grocery store I may possibly quarrel that you could dig up a great deal of further productive facts by doing a minor inspection yourself on the internet subsequently you could take pleasure in paying attention to assorted of the utterly terrible guide that is joint inside sundry of the hefty electrical sequences stores.

3. Price – Lets facial expression it, the largest profit of acquiring browse cyberspace by isolated is the price. The local brick as well as mortar stores with there overhead charges only can’t competition diverse of the prices that may possibly engagement got wind of visit cyberspace as the equivalent correct LCD flat computer screen tv. But prices would moreover be different a great deal savours only on the internet retailer to another. When you match value class convinced to seize the entirety stuffs into sympathy such for the reason that shipping expenses furthermore tolls once uncovering the real value of the LCD. The value savings may well troth significant, absolutely on the mid to expensive absolute displays. At the identical time, you can’t delicately rely on expenditure unaided as acquiring an LCD browse cyberspace which brings us to the after consideration.

4. Company reputation – Make convinced the retailer is reliable. What suitable is it to excepting a quantity of currency on a brand new television tube merely to uncover out that the retailer is shipping faulty products. Is there a agency cellular phone total to conversation and questions? Is the webpage professional? Are the whole lot commerce positioned on a girdle connection? Have you heard of the retailer before? Check out client rankings furthermore assessment online. A good, surefire web content will permit clients to area analysis of the product, except moreover of the provision that they got hold of take pleasure in the retailer.

5. Return tactic - Another vastly front-page pity as purchasing an LCD telly surf the net is anything is the get back policy? If the telly is wounded will they go again it, no interrogatives asked? If so, who is answerable given that the shipping fee? Will they pay shipping or are you in charge given that shipping? What if you yearn to exchange the tv? One of the issues almost running into a departmental store is that you would in point of fact acquire a gander at the tv. What if you apply the LCD, acquire it sent domestic with at that time fathom it is not what on earth you were expecting? Can you exchange the television as well as if therefore whatsoever is the restocking hire if any? An prematurely data of the go back strategy is important while buying an LCD online. The pleasing visit cyberspace retailers will taste a come back commission that is since tolerable or improved at the moment countless of the brick with mortar stores.

6. Shipping – It is worthy to fathom various subjects almost about shipping. What are the shipping costs? Will the merchandise search out incapacitated inside shipping as well as if thus who is responsible. Some personalities perceive that there is a a great deal of larger opportunity of obtaining a injured item for consumption as soon as procuring browse cyberspace as well as evoking it shipped, but several times there is less coping with of a telly indulge in a hefty surf the net retailer who ships the telly delight in their warehouse subsequently there is inside miscelanneous of the local stores where tvs are shipped delight in single warehouse to an added till it ultimately enters the stores warehouse with at that time delivered to your home. Is pallid glove delivery obtainable to ship the LCD promptly into your home? Can you taste any person setup the telly as you also if consequently whatsoever is the cost.

7. What as regards to cables, accessories in addition to extended warranties? – Cables, accessories in addition to extended warranties pass through lengthy been a foremost advantage deep-seated for the reason that the brick along with mortar stores. Do you still attention how the sales staff seem to until there more or less extreme sales pitches as the extended warranties? Many times that is while they withstand the possibility to earn a more bountiful hire based on the assurance sales. Today’s flat panel LCD tvs are a lot of numerous surefire subsequently inside life ancient times plus it is often not charges the further charges of an extended warranty. Not to talk about cables. Stores regularly exerting the sales of exorbitant cables phrasing that you appetite each other request to capture a gracefulness film with audio experience. These cables are one and only of the areas where a departmental store may variety a bunch of money. The fact is that there is absolutely trivial variance between cables, conspicuously the digital cable such because HDMI. Local stores won’t take the discount cables, as a result ordering cables surf the net is a faultless method to until a large transaction of money.

Buying an LCD flat monitor television tube on the internet is a giant manners to capture a costly nobility television in addition to except a group of currency at the matching time. With a slight grain of browse cyberspace experiment you would get that exact telly derive pleasure a definite retailer as well as go through it conveniently shipped house where you furthermore your clan will engagement able to take pleasure in the newest motion picture parades or sports occasion on your latest great display screen tv.

497 of 501 people found the following review helpful.
BEST TV BARGAIN on Amazon!!!
By MadQueen
I purchased this TV on sale in Dec. 2011 for under $300. It’s an updated model of TCL L40FHDF11TA. It’s put in a master bedroom. I’ll rate each category in Amazon’s system of 1 to 5 stars. My ratings are relative to how this TV stacks up against other TVs in its price range.

SETUP *** (3 stars)
The TV was well-packed in the shipping box (43.5″ x 31″ x 10.5″) with 2 yellow nylon straps holding it together. (If your straps are missing, the shipper might have broken them while carrying and dropped the TV.) For wall mounting, you need a VESA 400x400mm compliant mount such as this, this, or this. I used the glass stand. If you’re trying to fit it into a shelf, the dimensions with stand are 38.5″ x 27″ x 9″ (without stand: 38.5″ x 24.5″ x 4″; note the 4″ depth instead of 1.5″ for an LED). The power cord doesn’t have a power brick attached which is a plus. I’m using a learning universal remote which did find codes for this TV. Try ‘RCA’ if ‘TCL’ didn’t work for you. I suggest using an universal remote since it’s much easier to replace than to replace the original remote if you break it.
Some remote codes gathered for reference:
DirecTV: 11447
Comcast: 11447
Dish Network: 503
AT&T U-Verse: 1000
There might be a problem with the “TV powering on unexpectedly.” If your ‘SW Version’ reads V8-0RSC801-LF1V041, you’re OK. Otherwise, download the firmware update at TCL’s website onto any FAT-formatted device. (I used my phone.) Remember to wait at least 10 seconds after it says “Completed” before unplugging the USB cord. (I waited 30 seconds to be safe.) I’m guessing this is where some people might have messed up and broke the TV.

PICTURE ***** (5 stars)
The LCD panel is made by Samsung with their logo visible in the back (picture posted). As with most LCD TVs these days, the screen is glossy and not matte, so you do have to watch out for glare. After powering up the TV which took about 15 seconds, I changed the preset picture setting from the default ‘ECO’ to ‘Cinematic’. Cinematic/Movie mode is usually the setting that comes closest to a professional calibration. (If you’re interested in doing your own TV calibration, check out the Disney WOW blu-ray, search “AVS HD 709″ for a free one, or try my “quick picture calibration” below.) It has 5 zoom modes, with ‘No Overscan’ being preferred. If it isn’t available, choose ‘Full’ for the least amount of cropping. I watched the TV from an Amazon recommended distance of about 7 to 8 feet. After hooking up my blu-ray player with HDMI (not included) and making sure it’s 1080p (by pressing the ‘Info’ button), I tried watching some dark movies (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) as a stress test. I didn’t notice any obvious picture defects. The viewing angle is very good for an LCD. The contrast is good, with listed 4000:1 contrast ratio. I compared it to my living room LED with 10 million:1 contrast ratio. The LED has slightly better contrast with deeper blacks, though definitely not 2500 times better, so I wouldn’t read too much into contrast ratios when shopping for TVs. There are a few nitpicks. There’s a slight uniformity problem (light bleed) in the upper corners, noticeable in an all black picture. There’s slight motion blurring due to its slightly-slow 8 ms response time (shadow trails) and 60 Hz refresh rate (jerkiness on 24 frames/sec sources). The yellow color is a little off. None of these are major problems; I’ve seen much worse at this price range, so no stars are deducted.

AUDIO *** (3 stars)
The two 8 watt speakers are passable for a bedroom. It has a nice equalizer menu with presets and 5 manually adjustable bars. It has Dolby Digital sound, but you definitely need to add your own speakers to take advantage of it. You can hook up your speakers via coaxial digital audio out, RCA out (white/red), or headphone out. There’s no optical digital audio out (Toslink) and no ARC (audio return channel). I hooked up a Sony bookshelf system via RCA out which did improve the sound dramatically. The headphone out wasn’t working on my unit, but I’m ok with it since I don’t use headphones.

GAMING ***** (5 stars)
I hooked up my Xbox 360 via HDMI, changed the Xbox ‘HDTV settings’ to 1080p and ‘Reference Levels’ to Expanded, and turned off all image processing on the TV using my settings below. I tried a couple games (MW3, BF3, Skyrim, Madden 12, and Forza 4) and didn’t notice any input lag. (Results should be similar with PS3 and Wii.) By the way, never hook up your gaming system with yellow composite RCA cables. LCD/LED and plasma TVs can’t natively display interlaced video, so they’ll need to spend time deinterlacing and therefore create additional input lag.

PC **** (4 stars)
I connected my PC with a VGA cable. I had to change my Windows monitor settings to “unhide modes that this monitor cannot display” in order to get the native resolution of 1920×1080. (This resolution is not supported for the VGA port. It might not work, so you might need to settle for 1280×720 if you have to use VGA. Or connect with DVI or HDMI for 1080p support.) For testing, I opened a Word document set to Times New Roman 6-point font and had no trouble reading it with ‘Sharpness’ at 0. You can use it as a big monitor as long as you don’t expect it to have the clarity of a 22″ monitor when viewing within 3′. (It’s got the same amount of pixels spread across 3.4 times the area.) When viewed at 5′ or more, clarity won’t be a problem.

MEDIA *** (3 stars)
The USB port accepts pictures and music but not videos. There’s no internet streaming, which I preferred. I have plenty of devices capable of streaming, so I don’t want to pay extra for a feature I don’t need.

RELIABILITY **** (4 stars)
The TCL FHDF11TA series has over 1000 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of 4 stars, which is probably as good as it gets for a generic brand. I also like the fact that it has a 2 year warranty instead of 1. The only concern is that the warranty is being done by A & D Electronics (the company that TCL has outsourced for its warranty claims) which has an F rating on BBB. The poor rating is a result of, I think, a shortage of personnel. If you’re lucky and catch them on a low volume of repairs, you’ll get prompt service; otherwise, you might need to be patient and persistent to get your TV repaired. (FYI, their number is 877-470-7766, 9AM-5PM PST, M-F.) If all else fails, try contacting Amazon. Some people did have success even after the 30 day return period. You can also add 1 extra year of warranty by purchasing with Mastercard or AmEx. And if you have Costco membership, you can purchase SquareTrade to add 3 extra years of warranty for a total of 5 for $30 (cheaper than Amazon).

PRICE ***** (5 stars)
Free shipping, free 30 day return (save the box for this), delivered to your door in 2 days for under $300 is hard to beat. Amazon also lets you do a price adjustment if the price drops within 14 days.

OTHER TVS
Here are 2 TVs I considered before settling on the TCL:
LG 32LK330 – This is a good, basic, name-brand 32″ LCD TV suitable for a bedroom. It only has 64% of the TCL’s viewing area though.
LG 42LK450 – This 42″ LCD TV has good all-around performance and is suitable as a primary TV in an apartment, albeit at a price premium.
I’d be careful about getting the LG 42LV4400 LED, despite its attractive specs and price, due to its reliability problem (and hence its low ratings). Until it’s resolved, check out the LG 42LK520 instead if you want 120 Hz.

MISC – QUICK PICTURE CALIBRATION
1. Change preset to ‘Cinematic’. After checking out some calibration patterns, I find both the default ‘Brightness’ of 50 and ‘Contrast’ of 80 to be spot on.
2. Change ‘Sharpness’ to 0. With a clear HD source, you shouldn’t need to artificially boost the sharpness. If words look blurry, you can play around with it.
3. Change ‘Noise Reduction’ to low. Similar to Sharpness, you don’t need much image processing with a clear source.
4. I find the default ‘Backlight’ of 60 to be suitable for a dimly-lit room. With most lights on, 80 looks about right. If sunlight is present, boost it to 100. Adjust it according to your room lighting and eye comfort level.
5. (optional) For adjusting colors, you normally need to use filters with a calibration disc. I like to do it by eye using my own pictures (preferably scanned studio pictures). We should all be able to pick out the nuances of our own skin tones. Alternatively, play a familiar movie and pause when you have a clear shot of a face, then adjust. I find the default ‘Color’ of 40 to be satisfactory. If you can’t get ‘Color’ to look right, try changing ‘Color Temperature’ by 1 and then go back to changing ‘Color’.

Since writing this review, I was contacted by phone both by TCL directly and the management of A&D Electronics and they are currently shipping me a new unit, 2-day air, and have profusely apologized for the extensive communication issues I received during the service process.

I still believe TCL would benefit from a significant investment and restructuring in their customer service workflow, and the frustrations of my customer-service experience will weigh into my decision to purchase again from them. But they have finally resolved my issue in a very high-touch manner, so I have moved my original review of one star to three stars. I hope that others who experience similar customer service woes can also find resolution for their issues.

——–
ORIGINAL REVIEW: (1 Star)

I have loved this TV and actually bought two more, for my family and my office. The picture quality for the price is unbeatable. However, after 5 months, the screen developed a weird issue where a 2 inch strip of pixels displayed a reversed (left to right) image. I call customer service, and after a long wait talked with someone who took my info and asked me to unplug the TV and plug it back in. When that didn’t work, she said “I cannot help you further, so I’m escalating your case to level 2.” She gave me a different number to call which is for some company called AD Electronics USA. I called it for 4 days straight and got a perpetual busy signal. Finally, I was able to get through. The guy I talked with (cs10@adelectronicsusa.com) asked me to email him my receipt and a short description of the problem, and then said he would call me back because they were closing for the night.

That was 10 days ago. He will not respond via email or phone. So I’m stuck with a broken TV and little recourse to get it fixed. I am absolutely flabbergasted at how this company treats customers and sick that I have loudly recommended it to other people as a quality TV.

You go to the website, download the update, put it on a memory stick, plug the stick into the USB port on the TV et voila! 2 clicks and 30 seconds later you’re done.

Bought this t.v. for a new apartment and with a few caveats, am pleased with my purchase. The picture quality is great, sound completely adequate for my needs. The only oddities are these. The T.V. turns itself on randomly. I turn it off and somewhere between 1 and 8 hours later it turns back on. read the manual – found nothing to explain it, googled and found one user with a similar complaint who was advised to contact the manufacturer. That seems somewhat ominous – I will contact the company and post later with the outcome. The second oddity is that COMCAST does not have the codes from TCL to program the Comcast remote. The installer had thought I would find something on the Internet and I did, but not for my model. However, after reading that TCL builds many RCA t.v.s I went back to Comcast page on programming your remote and checked the RCA codes. Turned out that the “most likely” RCA code worked like a charm.

From Comcast page
[...]
Others to try: 11447, 11347, 11547, 11247, 11147, 10679, 11661, 11958, 10093, 12002, 10051, 10090, 11047, 11602″
Hope that helps someone else out there.

At no point did I feel that I had to overtighten the screws in order to keep things from wobbling. The one glitch is that (in English, French, and Spanish) the instructions for assembling the base have the labels for the front and the rear switched, so that the pedestal is alleged to be closer to the front of the base than the rear, contrary to what published photos of the assembled product indicate. I don’t know if this mislabeling is what has given people problems with the base, or if Samsung used to ship worse-fitting hardware than it does now. In any case, I’m glad I didn’t let the complaints about the base hold me back from purchasing this item.

Hetherington
Cons:
1) As noted in other reviews attaching the stand to the television is challenging and will require much more force than you would believe necessary.
2) Owners manual is not very thorough nor are instructions very clear
3) Attaching the securing strap(not included) on the back of the televsion to your stand involves creativity & parts of your choosing, as there are no instruction.

Pros:
1) Excellent video quality for 720P/60Hz
2) Attractive / aesthetically pleasing appearance
3) Nice menu layout and features
4) (2)HDMI’s & (1)USB

For anyone experiencing problems with the picture quality this television has a built in picture & audio test. To implement the test(s) you will need
to press;
1)The Green Menu Button near the center of the remote
2)Use the UP arrow to scroll UP one to where “Support” is displayed vertically along the left edge of the set
3)Arrow to the RIGHT Once
4)Arrow DOWN once to “Self Diagnosis”
5)Press Enter or the button in the middle of the four arrow keys
6)Select Either “Picture Test” or “Sound Test”

The picture test displays two children on a beach surrounded by some beach toys, it displays very vibrant colors, blues, oranges, yellow as well as strong sunlight contrast
to check the black and white balance of the set. My test image appears incredible.

The sound test plays some type of theme song music that I personally find annoying yet it also provides very clear, stereo sound and does so at the volume level your set is
set to at the time of the test.

Unfortunately because the owners manual is so lacking it takes time to learn all the settings and adjust them appropriately. Yet once you have the picture quality of this television
rivals any 32″ television I have ever seen, bar none.

The Samsung quality is all there and it feels considerably evolved from the previous generations I’ve owned. I’m using this as an office monitor and television – for both occasions, it’s a terrific set. The colors are vivid, the sound is crisp, and I have yet to experience any issues with it. I’d also note that this television, while considered the entry level for 2011, is slightly thinner and substantially lighter than other 32″ models within the Samsung product lineup and other companies’ models within the same price range. There ARE thinner and lighter 32″ TV’s, but you’ll spend an additional $150+ just for the size difference. This was a deciding factor in my case, since I wanted an easily wall-mounted TV without breaking the bank. I’d highly recommend this particular model for anyone looking for a bedroom/office television. It’s just the right quality and size at just the right price.

Winning
We have had two new HD TVs for just a bit over 5 months. One is a 23″ Sony and one a 32″ LG. The Sony hooked up easily, but the LG was like our first color set. We diddled with picture, sound, aspect ratio, and other settings to get the best picture and sound on each channel. I still don’t know if the differences between channels is resolution, settings, or in the case of the news, makeup. But we were just happy to get it so that we could see all the face lifts…

While browsing the deal sites I noticed this TV listed at $197 dollars and clicked the link to the Amazon site. I was not familiar with the Haier brand of televisions and thought of it as a cheap knockoff TV with subpar screens. There were only four reviews of this TV while i was contemplating the purchase and though they were mostly good i was a little leery about buying this. Amazon made the decision easier by offering a 30 day guarantee with free return shipping so I went ahead and purchased the TV. I am a subscriber to Amazon Prime, so 2 day shipping was free. The TV showed up on my doorstep 2 days after the purchase. Thank you Amazon. The box that the TV came in was in great shape. There were no dents and it didn’t look like the box had been abused. The packaging for the TV was superb. I unwrapped the TV and removed the plastic on the front of the TV. The front bezel is a very shiny plastic. The stand which is also a shiny black plastic comes with 4 screws to attach to the TV. This TV comes with a glowing light at the bottom center of the bezel which indicates whether the TV is on or off. It shows red when off and green when on. Nice touch for such a low priced TV. I hooked my DirectTV box to the TV and selected the correct HDMI input. The inputs on the back are not exactly in the best positioning for connection of your devices. I assume they configured the hookups that away because some people like to hang the TV’s on the wall install of the stand. The picture on this TV is very clear with very good color saturation. Some TV’s look a bit washed out but not this TV. Would this TV compare to a high definition TV such a Sony or Samsung? I would say no, but you would pay much more for one of those TV’s. Some people have said that the sound is not very good on this TV. I find that the sound is more than adequate. It gets plenty loud in my office. I’ve never owned any TV where the sound is great coming out of its own speakers. Thats why they have surround systems. People, for the price you cannot go wrong with this TV. If this is the size of TV you are looking for and are wanting to use it in a bedroom or office or anywhere a smaller TV is adequate I would say…Buy it now!!! Before the price goes up.

But now that it’s back to its regular price, there might be better options such as the LG 32LK330, the Panasonic TC-L32C3, or the Samsung LN32D403. Or you can upgrade to the bigger TCL 40″ TV which I also reviewed. For a little bit more money, you get a 57% increase in viewing area, a Samsung 1080p panel, an increase in sound quality, and a 2 year warranty.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I purchased this TV on sale in Nov. 2011 for $197. It’s an updated model of Haier L32B1120. I’ll rate each category in Amazon’s system of 1 to 5 stars. My ratings are relative to how this TV stacks up against other TVs in its price range.

SETUP *** (3 stars)
For wall mounting, you need a VESA 400x200mm compliant mount such as this, this, or this. I used the plastic stand. The 2 shorter screws go into the top holes which wasn’t stated in the manual. If you’re trying to fit it into a shelf, the dimensions with stand are 31.25″ x 22″ x 8.5″. The power cord doesn’t have a power brick attached which is a plus. I don’t have a problem with the connections being on the bottom of the TV since I’ll only be connecting them one time. I consider the headphone connection on the rear bottom to be a design flaw. (If you do want to use headphones, getting something like this should solve the problem.) I’m using a learning universal remote which did find codes for this TV.

PICTURE ***** (5 stars)
I changed the preset picture setting to ‘Theater’. I also changed the ‘Backlight’ to 9. There are some slight flickering when it’s set to 8 or lower. I watched some blu-ray movies from an Amazon recommended distance of about 6 feet and didn’t notice any obvious picture defects. The viewing angle is very good for an LCD. The black level is average, but the brightness is good. The screen is glossy, so do watch out for glare. BTW, you won’t notice a difference between a 720p and a 1080p 32″ TV when viewed at a normal viewing distance.

GAMING ***** (5 stars)
I hooked up my Xbox 360, tried a couple games, and didn’t notice any input lag.

AUDIO * (1 star, 3 stars if it wasn’t broken)
The audio sounds about right for 7 watt LCD TV speakers, which isn’t great but passable for a bedroom. You can hook up speakers to it via coaxial digital audio out or headphone out. The TV speakers don’t automatically turn off when you plug into the headphone out though. (You need to press the mute button. If you adjust the volume or turn the TV off and on, you need to press mute again, which might be annoying to some.) Here’s my only problem with this TV: When the sound is coming through the HDMI, it’s fine. But when I hooked up the sound via the 2 sets of RCA inputs or the PC audio in, I get static noises. It sounds like a slightly out of range radio station; one moment sound seems fine, but another moment the static cuts in, especially noticeable during quiet segments.

RELIABILITY ??? (Unrated)
This is the first popular TV from this brand, so I’ll need a couple more months before determining how reliable it is. I suggest getting the SquareTrade extended warranty for some peace of mind.

PRICE ***** (5 stars)
Free shipping, free 30 day return, delivered to your door in 2 days for $197 is hard to beat.

I would have rated this TV a 5 star if it wasn’t for the broken audio. Instead of exchanging it, I returned it after finding a good deal on a bigger TV.
